Our approach.
What is a plant-based diet? Is this the same as being vegan? And where does Growing Plant-Based stand amidst the various definitions and approaches? Let’s dig in!
Digging in to the definitions.
Plant-based.
The term ‘plant-based’ is currently used to a range of dietary patterns and/or foods that may be:
-
mostly or predominantly plant-based, where products may include some animal derived ingredients or diets may include small amounts of animal products.
-
total or exclusively plant-based, where products and diets are free from animal ingredients.
When you put it on a plate, a plant-based diet is one that emphasises foods derived from plants, such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils, nuts and seeds. This can include meat and dairy alternatives like sausages made from pea protein, tofu made from soybeans and cheese made from cashew nuts.
So, how does this fit in with the concept and practice of veganism?
Vegan.
In a nutshell, vegans embrace total plant-based diets as part of a wider philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to avoid the exploitation of and cruelty to animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.
There is an interesting origin story behind the term, which was coined by the UK’s Vegan Society in 1944 as a contraction of the word vegetarian – "because veganism starts with vegetarianism and carries it through to its logical conclusion" - but it is ultimately a philosophy of nonviolence dating back to the dawn of recorded time, with rich traditions in cultures around the world.
